The Greenest Person in the Languedoc: Gérard Bertrand
Biodynamic pioneer, Gérard Bertrand, has taken home the Green Personality of the Year Award at the annual Drinks Business Green Awards, hosted virtually on 07th December 2020.
The Drinks Business Green Awards are awarded every year to raise awareness of green issues in the drinks trade. They highlight the outstanding initiatives in sustainability and environmental performance. The Personality award honours the exemplary commitment of a person for the environment, and their actions taken to inspire their company and a wider audience.
Gérard Bertrand, owner and winemaker at Gérard Bertrand Wines commented:
“I am very honoured to be named Green Personality of the Year. For more than 30 years, I have been working and directing all the projects in our vineyards in a sustainable and environmental performance dynamic, a dynamic we must make permanent. I am convinced that a viticulture in harmony with nature is the best way to create great wines and also the right way to demonstrate our deep consideration for nature. I aim for a positive impact of our activities and I am very aware of my responsibility as a winemaker towards the environment and the biodiversity. I am very pleased with this award which demonstrates my commitment. Be the Change!”
The panel of sustainability and drinks industry experts, chaired by Patrick Schmitt MW, aimed to draw attention to green leaders in order to encourage the entire industry to follow their sustainable path. For this 11th edition of the awards, the panel acknowledged 11 categories, in addition to a special prize the Green Personality award.
On the decision to award Gérard Bertrand the award, The Drinks Business Green Awards judges said:
“Our winner stood out for his long-term commitment to organic viticulture – a journey that began in 2002 – and his recent efforts, as this year his entire vineyard operation, spanning 880 hectares across 16 estates in the Languedoc, is now either fully converted to biodynamics or in the conversion process. Having initially experimented with just four hectares at Domaine de Cigalus in Corbières in 2002, now over 60% of his vineyards are certified biodynamic by Demeter, and the remaining 40% are in the process of being certified. We also loved how he is helping the growers he partners with, by giving them technical, economical and commercial support in their quest to adopt organic farming methods.”
Gérard Bertrand, also received the special commendations from the jury for the Best Organic initiative category that highlights the way he conducts all his activities with the aim of building a better world, in particular with regards to the producer’s Bee Friendly wines development project.
For more than 30 years, Gérard Bertrand has dedicated himself to his passion and his father’s heritage. Third generation winemaker, Gérard Bertrand learnt to make wine alongside his father, joining him for his first vintage at the age of ten.
The Gérard Bertrand Group now owns and operates 16 Châteaux and estates across the prestigious appellations in Languedoc-Roussillon exporting wine to 175 countries and employing 320 people worldwide. Committed to biodynamic, organic and sustainable viticulture, Gérard Bertrand has pledged to have 80% of his entire wine production converted to organic by 2023.
The wines of Gérard Bertrand are imported into the UK exclusively by Hallgarten & Novum Wines.
