Speaking about this exciting new partnership Steve Daniel says: “This is frontier country and, right now, the most exciting wine region in South Africa. It is the home of bush vines and dry-farmed vineyards which use the natural contours of the land and the unforgiving climate to give great fruit: Chenins with unusual depth of flavour, Sauvignons singing with fruit, inky Mourvèdres and juicy, moreish Carignan.”

Jim Wilson adds: “The buzz about Swartland is huge in the UK just now: incredible winemaking talent and exciting and individual wines - but the reality is that volumes can be limited and pricing premium. Not so with Swartland Winery.  Their flexibility, access to top quality grapes and production capabilities give us the very best this cutting edge wine region can offer, but in a way that meets the commercial needs of the UK market.  Hallgarten is perfectly placed to bring the excitement of the region to the market.”

First founded in 1948, Swartland Winery today has access to grapes from around 3,600 hectares – 80 per cent of which are small bush vines with a low average yield per hectare.

The wines are available in the UK with immediate effect - for further details contact Chris Wilson on 01582 722538; chris.wilson@hdnwines.co.uk.

The full Swartland Winery collection will be launched at the Wozani trade tasting on 7th October 2015, Table 6.

THE SWARTLAND WINERY COLLECTION

Founders

This range celebrates the founding member of the Swartland co-operative who came together in 1948 to start making wine from vines planted on this unforgiving land. It includes two fresh and zippy whites, a fruit-packed Pinotage and a red Field Blend which marries Mourvèdre and Shiraz in a typically Rhône style.

• Founders Chenin Blanc, 2015
• Founders Sauvignon Blanc, 2015
• Founders Field Blend Red, 2015 (Mourvèdre 70%, Shiraz 30%)
• Founders Pinotage , 2014

Winemaker’s Collection

An expression of Swartland’s finest terroir. Grapes are hand-selected from vineyards that grow on granite-rich soils – reflected in the name and mineral characters of the two blends here. There is also a 100% Syrah in the range, which is spicy and Rhône-influenced.

• Granite Rock Blend White, 2015 (Chenin 40%, Chardonnay 20%, Viognier 20%, Roussanne 20%)
• Granite Rock Blend Red, 2014 (Mourvèdre 70%, Carignan 20%, Grenache 10%)
• Winemakers Collection Syrah, 2014

Limited Release

In the heart of the Swartland region lie the exclusively selected vineyards chosen for these wines. Situated on high-weathered granite slopes, well-known for their low-yield bush vines, these vineyards produce distinctive, concentrated wines all made in an old-world style.
• Limited Release Viognier, 2015
• Limited Release Roussanne, 2015
• Limited Release Mourvèdre, 2012

Bush Vine

The depth and complexity of the Bush Vine range is a reflection of the older bush vines that are grown in the Swartland region; and absolute expression of terroir.

• Bush Vines Chenin Blanc, 2014
• Bush Vines Pinotage, 2013
• Bush Vines Syrah, 2013

Idelia

‘Idelia’ means ‘nobility’, and Swartland’s premium and limited-release wine captures the depth and complexity of the three noble varieties in the blend. The grapes for this ‘Cape Blend’ comes from old bush vines and reflect brilliantly the true characteristics of the unique Swartland terroir.

• Idelia SMG, 2011 (Pinotage 35%, Shiraz 35%, Cabernet Sauvignon 29%, Merlot 1%)
