Hallgarten increases Italian offering with Sella & Mosca and La Collina Dei Ciliegi
La Collina Dei Ciliegi from Valpantena, the highest part of Valpolicella, produce ambitious and modern wines in an elegant style. Sardinia’s Sella & Mosca create wines which are influenced by the unique history and climate of the island.
Founded over 120 years ago, Sella & Mosca’s journey started when Ermino Sella, an engineer, and Edgardo Mosca, a lawyer, undertook an ambitious project to transform marshlands near Alghero into vineyards and a vine nursery. Today, Sella & Mosca have vineyards in three distinct areas each with unique soils, climate and position which all influence the individual character of the wines. Sella & Mosca have a strong focus on local grape varieties - Cannonau and Vermentino. The historic cellars are still used for ageing, and are now complemented by modern winemaking facilities which have been upgraded since Sella & Mosca’s purchase by Terra Moretti in 2016.
Hallgarten’s extensive Italian portfolio is further elevated by La Collina Dei Ciliegi, a young, dynamic winery in Valpolicella bringing a fresh take to the wines of the region. The 3,000 cherry trees planted nearby inspired the winery’s name. Located in the village of Erbin, in Valpantena, the vineyards are the highest in the region, up to 700 metres above sea level, allowing the grapes to ripen slowly and retain freshness. Their winemaking philosophy is Burgundian, focussing on each individual parcel to create an elegant snapshot of each terroir.
Hallgarten’s Portfolio Director, Jim Wilson, commented: “We are very excited to be welcoming these two exceptional producers to our Italian portfolio. Our range of wines from Italy is full of variety and quality, and these additions fit perfectly within that. La Collina Dei Ciliegi produces wonderful, elegant Valpolicella, with a Burgundian approach, and take full advantage of their vineyards’ altitude. Island wines are always exciting and Sella & Mosca perfectly showcase the grape varieties and terroir of Sardinia through their range of wines.”
