Hallgarten Wines Expands in Italy with Four New Suppliers

Specialist wine importer, Hallgarten & Novum Wines, has developed its diverse Italian portfolio with the addition of Tuscan-based Villa Saletta and Petra, Alois Lageder from Alto Adige and Prosecco producer, Masottina, into its expanding range. The growth comes as Hallgarten Wines expands its portfolio across all areas of the winemaking world, joining other new Italian additions in Bellavista and Banfi.

Jim Wilson, Portfolio Director at Hallgarten & Novum Wines, commented: “Italy is an area of our portfolio that we are extremely excited to develop; adding strength and depth to our core group of suppliers.

“With Villa Saletta, we have two Chianti from a 700-year-old estate in Tuscany which is being renovated as part of a stunning transformation to it and the surrounding area; Alois Lageder embodies sustainability and family values at its sixth-generation family-operated winery; Tuscan producer, Petra, with their awe-inspiring winery created by Swiss architect Mario Botta; and Masottina, a premium producer of Prosecco, based in the heart of Conegliano Valdobbiadene.

“Each of these new additions to our range represents something different and unique that will give our customers, and their customers, a point of difference on their wine lists. As we look to add greater breadth and depth in the country’s key regions, it is important for us to continue to develop our Italian range and express the country’s regional diversity by working only with the best each area has to offer.”

All wines, from each of the new additions to Hallgarten Wines’ Italian portfolio, will be available to taste at Hallgarten Wines’ two-day Annual Tasting in January. Hosted at Old Billingsgate in London, on Monday 27th and Tuesday 28th January, the range will be shown alongside over 1,000 wines from across Hallgarten’s multiple award-winning portfolio.

Villa Saletta, Chianti, Tuscany

Purchased by Guy and Julia Hands in 2000, the duo have set their sights on reviving tradition at the 700-year-old estate. Beginning with the winemaking, huge investment has been made into renovating old vines and planting new plots according to a detailed understanding of the terroir. By blending traditional techniques and attitudes with the tools of modern agronomy, viticulture at Villa Saletta is now amongst some of the most advanced in Italy. Head Winemaker, David Landini, has described the terroir – a mix of flat sandy soils in the north, and clay/chalk on hills – as one of the driving factors for the success of their wines.

David Landini, Head Winemaker at Villa Saletta, commented: “Villa Saletta is thrilled to join Hallgarten Wines in this exciting new partnership. As a young brand with a rich heritage that dates back centuries, we are proud to craft wines that honour our history while embracing a modern vision. Hallgarten Wines, with over 90 years of experience as one of the UK’s leading specialist wine distributors, is recognised for its curated portfolio of high-quality wines and its strong connections across the industry. Their incredible team combines expertise with a passion for wine, making them an ideal partner to help Villa Saletta engage with the finest offerings of the wine world in the UK.”

Masottina, Conegliano Valdobbiadene, Prosecco

The family-owned Masottina has been in the hands of the Dal Bianco family since 1946. Now, 75 years later, brothers, Filippo and Federico Dal Bianco create award-winning Prosecco in their 220 hectares of vineyard in Prosecco’s Conegliano Valdobbiadene sub-region.

Federico Dal Bianco, Vice President at Masottina, commented: “At Masottina, we are thrilled to partner with Hallgarten & Novum Wines, a team that shares our passion for excellence and identity in the wine industry. This collaboration marks an exciting milestone for us, as we continue to bring the authentic spirit of our wines and our dedication to quality to discerning wine lovers in the UK.”

Alois Lageder, Alto Adige

Sixth-generation family-run Alois Lageder comprises of 50 hectare of vineyard, all of which is farmed organically or biodynamically to create a range of wines that captures the Alto Adige terroir. Originally founded in 1823 by Johann Lageder, the family at Alois Lageder now works with 90 grape growers alongside its own 50 hectare estate, cultivating 30 different grape varieties across the region.

Clemens Lageder, CEO at Alois Lageder, commented: "We’re delighted to announce our upcoming partnership with Hallgarten and its outstanding team, as well as the opportunity to reconnect with long-time partners Michael Saunders and Andrew Shaw. This collaboration is driven by three key factors: Hallgarten Wines’ extensive experience and trusted reputation, their strong customer focus paired with exceptional service, and, above all, their remarkable energy. We are confident they are the perfect partners to promote our organic and biodynamic wines across the UK."

Petra, Tuscany

The Petra winery and estate was with the goal of creating a new benchmark for Super Tuscans. The vineyards are located in Maremma, on the Tuscan coast and are certified organic. Winemaker, Beppe Caviola, renowned for his work in Barolo and Barbaresco, has led the way in creating wines that showcase the coastline’s unique sense of place.
