Hallgarten Wines Celebrates 90th Anniversary

Specialist wine importer, Hallgarten & Novum Wines, celebrates its 90th anniversary in 2023 and is marking the occasion with a calendar of activities throughout the year. Starting with the company’s Annual Tasting on 30th and 31st January, Hallgarten will pay homage to its longstanding partner suppliers, its experience in the wine industry and what the future holds across the next 12 months.

90 years ago, in 1933, German émigré Fritz Hallgarten arrived in the UK and started selling wine to restaurants and retail outlets across the country under the name ‘Hallgarten Wines’. Specialising in wines from Germany and the Rhône Valley, Fritz was one of the country’s experts of these wine regions, and built relationships with suppliers that continue at Hallgarten Wines to this day.

And that was the start of Hallgarten Wines. Over the past 90 years, Hallgarten has been an integral part of the British wine trade and has helped evolve, shape and develop it into the global wine industry it is now part of.

Hallgarten Managing Director, Andrew Bewes, commented: “Reaching such a significant milestone is a huge achievement for any business and I am extremely proud to be leading Hallgarten & Novum Wines into the future. Having spent the past few months trawling through our archives and unearthing the incredible history of the company, it is clear that whilst we have a huge amount of experience in the wine industry, we are still only 90 years young! The business has, throughout its history, constantly innovated and evolved, and we are not planning on stopping now! There are so many people who have contributed to our longevity and success, not least our family shareholders and my predecessors John Cunynghame, Uve Lenz and Peter Hallgarten, but special mention must go to Beverly Tabbron MW who, rather fittingly, celebrates a remarkable 45 years at Hallgarten, exactly 50% of the company’s tenure. Bev has driven and embraced countless changes during this time, and the company owes her a great deal."
