WOTW: Barros Colheita, 1996

In a nutshell: Because Christmas without port is like Shaun Ryder without Bez.

The producer: Now more than 100 years old, Barros Port is undoubtedly one of the most prestigious companies producing and trading in Port. Much of Barros’ success comes from Colheita ports – Old Tawnies from a single year matured in cask for a minimum period of seven years. Their expertise in Colheitas has established them as the stand out producer of this style.

The wine: A blend of Tinta Amarela, Tinta Barroca, Tinta Roriz and Touriga Franceca. The garpes are carefully selected and enjoy an extended maceration in order to obtain the necessary richness, body and fruitiness needed for a Colheita port. Fermentation was arrested by adding grape alcohol in order to produce a naturally sweet wine.

Tasting note: Bright brown-tawny colour with slight flashes of red. The wine reveals a complex bouquet of dried fruits. In the mouth it is delicate with a very balanced acidity, wonderful sweetness and excellent length.
