Wine Heroes Interview: Pierre Pastre, Chateau Fortia

The Chateauneuf-du-Pape producer on why he prefers wine to Coca-Cola

What sustains your love of wine?

Given the difficulties that nature can throw our way, we try to produce the most satisfying product possible. Each year the challenge is different. And at the end of the day, I prefer drinking wine to coca cola!

What was the last wine you consumed (not your own wine)?

A rosé wine from Tavel.

What’s the best wine you’ve ever consumed? And why?

My Reserve 2010 from Chateau Fortia and Beaucastel Roussane Blanc Cuvée Speciale are two wines that I continue to really enjoy time after time.

Can you sum up your winery in three words?

Traditional, welcoming and available.

What’s the best part of the winemaking process?

The day we make the decision to start the harvest.

What’s the worst part of the winemaking process?

The unknown weather conditions during the harvest.

Tell us something about your winery or company that nobody knows?

The number of hours that the manager works in order to keep the business running.

What’s the biggest mistake you’ve made in the winery/wine business?

To not systematically verify the important work that has supposedly been well-done.

Which unknown varieties will be big in 2020?

That is one of the best things about wine…you never know, so it will be a surprise for us all!

What music do you listen when making wine?

The symphony of a tank that is in the process of fermenting.

Who is your wine hero? And why?

Pierre le Roy who created the AOC because he protected regional wine identity.

Who is your sporting hero? And why?

Walter Spanghero because he played rugby because he loved it and not to be rich or a celebrity.

Who is your favourite Superhero?

Sir Winston Churchill because he had a phenomenal sense of humour.
