Hallgarten Overhauls Sicilian Portfolio
Specialist wine importer Hallgarten Druitt & Novum has bolstered its Italian offering with the addition of Colomba Bianca, Sicily’s leading organic winery, and boutique Etna producer Santa Maria La Nave.
Head of Buying Steve Daniel comments: “Southern Italy, in particular Sicily, is an area we have been looking at extending to provide our customers with a greater choice at a range of price points.”
Colomba Bianca harvest over 1,000 hectares of organic vineyard and have a further 1,000 hectares under conversion. It is their commitment to quality and to harvesting individual batches of wine that appealed to Steve, who will work with the winery to put together the blends for the UK.
“You could say they are a very large micro-brewery,” says Daniel. “The fruit harvested is fantastic and there is an incredible drive for quality.”
Also joining the Hallgarten portfolio is boutique producer Santa Maria La Nave which, situated on the north western slopes of Etna, is one of the highest vineyards in Europe. Made without the addition of sulphur, the wines are preserved with naturally high levels of sulphur in the soil resulting from ash eruptions. Only 6,000 bottles are produced each year with vintage variation dependent on volcanic activity.
“Etna offers sommeliers and independent merchants something truly exciting and a real talking point and we were delighted to be approached by one of the very best producers in the area,” says Daniel.
